Education office honored for success of reading program

The San Benito County Office of Education has been recognized for the success of the Footsteps2Brilliance reading program.

On Thursday, Dr. Greg Spencer, vice president from Footsteps2Brilliance, made a presentation to the San Benito County Office of Education Board. Spencer awarded the education office the “2019 Leadership Award for Innovation” for the SBCOE “Building Bridges 2 Literacy” initiative by utilizing Footsteps2Brilliance to close the literacy gap among our students across the county, according to the local education office.

The presentation recognized county schools Superintendent Krystal Lomanto for her leadership and partnerships with various local districts, while the Leadership Award for Innovation noted how local schools have read over 100 million words since the program’s inception in 2017-18.

Lomanto is in the midst of visiting schools where classrooms collectively read over a million words using Foosteps2Brillance this school year. Last week, she recognized four classrooms at San Juan School for the achievement.
