Hollister City Council members Monday approved some big changes for July 4 at the airport.
Council members unanimously approved a “Fly In” at the Hollister Municipal Airport on July 4. A fly-in is generally a tamed-back version of full-blown airshow like the one Hollister hosted for several years before its cancellation in 2017.
The council also supported an “enhanced” fireworks show at the airport, an event put on by the city July 4. The fireworks show will add about $15,000 to the $10,000 previously spent. The 20-minute show will include fireworks being shot off every three seconds and music, said city official Mike Chambless.
Council members in approving the enhanced fireworks show noted how it will bring the community out and possibly cut back on illegal fireworks.
Councilman Rolan Resendiz called it a “great investment in our community.”
Councilman Marty Richman said he wanted to take the opportunity to offer a message on illegal fireworks.
“Illegal fireworks are extraordinarily dangerous … extraordinarily,” he said.
With the fly-in, Chambless told council members he is talking with Bay Area airport managers who have said they would post information on the event. The fly-in will cost $20,000.
