City, SBHS extend deal allowing public to use tennis courts

Hollister City Council members Monday agreed to a proposal that will allow residents to continue using tennis courts at San Benito High School on Saturdays and during the week when they’re not otherwise in use.

The agreement will cost the city $15,000 for one year, while the deal is renewable for up to five years. It updates a one-year agreement that expired in January.

Council members agreed to the matter 4-0, with Councilwoman Honor Spencer recusing herself from the issue because she works at the high school.

The item authorizes a contract between the City of Hollister and the San Benito High School District, effective January 1, 2019, to allow public use of the tennis courts located at the high school at 1220 Monterey St., on Saturdays and for city-supervised community recreation programs, according to the agenda.

City Manager Bill Avera at Monday’s council meeting clarified that the courts will be accessible during the week “as available.” To use the courts during the week, residents would have to make arrangements with the school to play there when there aren’t activities going on, Avera said.

“I think it’s a good use of recreation money,” Councilman Marty Richman said. “You get your money’s worth.”

“Let’s go play some tennis,” Mayor Ignacio Velazquez added.
