Obituary: Teresa Sanchez Arellano (1924-2019)

Resided in Gilroy, CA

Teresa Sanchez Arellano (Grandma) passed away peacefully on Monday, January 14, 2019 at the age of 94 years old. She was surrounded by loved ones at the Gilroy Rehabilitation Center where she resided during her last years of life.

She is survived by her 3 children: Vicente Sanchez Garcia (New Idria, CA), Enrique Sanchez Fernandez (Hollister, CA), Tomasa Garcia Aguado (Selma, CA); 17 Grandchildren, over 33 great-grand children and a couple of great-great-grand children.

Teresa was born in Quenivas, Durango on February 24, 1924. She came to the United States in the early 1960’s. She lived in numerous places throughout California including Hollister. The majority of her last year’s of life where in Panoche Valley where she resided with her son Vicente and daughter-in-law Esperanza. She helped raise six of her grandchildren: Leticia Garcia (Hollister, CA), Teresa Garcia (Campbell, CA), Olivia Nunez (Mountain View, CA), Yolanda Nunez (Hollister, CA), Martin Garcia (Fresno, CA), and Vicente Garcia (Fresno, CA). She worked seasonally in the canneries and in the fields.

She was committed to her family and her faith. A devote Christian, she attend church whenever possible and tried to instill a love for God in her family. Her biggest joy came from being around her family, she was always in the kitchen cooking up something for them. Well into her 80’s, she could be found making homemade flour tortillas, chopping wood in the back yard or feeding her beloved chickens.

A special thanks to the staff of Gilroy Rehabilitation Center in particular: Marta, Gaby and Conjit for loving and taking care of her until her last breath. Our family will always be eternally grateful.

Her services will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Black-Cooper-Sander Funeral Home in Hollister, CA. Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and the service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Pastora Barbara Olague will officiate the ceremony. Followed by her burial at I.O.O.F cemetery.
