A fatality was reported on Highway 101 north of Monterey Road early Monday morning.
The accident happened at 12:40 a.m. on the highway in the Gilroy area. A 27-year-old Morgan Hill man died in the incident, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of a Nissan Titan drove off the road for unknown reasons and collided with a guardrail separating northbound from southbound 101 traffic.
The collision with the guardrail caused the vehicle to overturn onto its right side, pinning the driver, according to the CHP.
After a lengthy extrication effort by emergency personnel, the driver was removed but succumbed to injuries, according to CHP.
The collision is under investigation, but neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors.
