A police spokesman said there are “no new developments” in the apparently active case involving a fentanyl-related death in late 2017.
Hollister police Sgt. Don Pershall responded when asked by email for the status of the case that resulted in a February arrest of 18-year-old Daniel Cadena.
“There are no new developments regarding this case,” Pershall replied.
San Benito County District Attorney Candice Hooper in April confirmed her office returned the case to the Hollister Police Department for further investigative work. The district attorney has not charged Cadena with a crime in the matter, and he has been released from jail.
Hollister police in February announced the arrest of Cadena after officers discovered an overdose death victim had ingested several narcotics and controlled substances, causing the overdose death in mid-December 2017. According to police, one of those substances was deemed as counterfeit pharmaceutical medication, and the drug unknowingly contained the powerful narcotic fentanyl.
Cadena was arrested during a search warrant executed by agents of the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team, along with Hollister police officers. Cadena was later booked at the San Benito County Jail for charges alleging involuntary manslaughter, and furnishing/sales of narcotics and controlled substances.
