Hollister district OKs interim superintendent

Hollister School District trustees Friday unanimously approved Dr. William Barr as interim superintendent following the departure of Dr. Lisa Andrew.

Barr is a former interim superintendent for San Benito High School and former superintendent of the Monterey County School District.

Barr’s is expected to start July 18. He will make $935 per day for 46 days of work, with provisions for extensions potentially lasting through next June. He would not receive health or vacation benefits.

Barr’s pay was the main discussion point during Friday’s meeting due to questions from the public.

“My understanding is they took my daily rate and added 10 percent,” said Andrew, noting how her daily rate is $850.

Andrew resigned after two years on the job to lead a Silicon Valley nonprofit. She said she will come back July 18 to help Barr in the transition. She mentioned in the meeting how search firms indicated interim superintendents generally make $1,000 to $1,500 per day.

Andrew said the 46 days is the max Barr can work without his retirement pay being cut off, but pointed out how the district can prolong his tenure by having him work less than full time.

“That gives you that flexibility,” Andrew said.

Board President Pat Moore indicated Barr expects to work two days per week during the interim period.

Trustee Elizabeth Martinez added her thoughts at that point.

“It is very difficult to find a good, quality person at this stage of the game,” she said.
