This week, five ELD (English Language Development) teachers and two History teachers from San Benito High School led 32 students who are approaching reclassification through a weeklong program called Summer Scholars Academy. The goal was to have all of the students reclassified—meaning they have sufficient English proficiency to be reclassified as a fluent English speaker. The program, primarily featuring incoming freshmen but including a few soon-to-be sophomores, focused heavily on writing. Gavilan College helped fund the program. The participating teachers were: Carissa Alvarez, Eric Martin, Brandon Shores, Sue Burke, Lorena Fernandez, Principal Adrian Ramirez and Eric Davis. The week wrapped up with a potluck and a Q&A session with Principal Ramirez, Counselor Irma Lozano, and Student Support Manager Robert Rivas.
