A judge will decide in July if there is enough evidence for a trial against rape suspect Cory D. Daugherty.
Daugherty, of Hollister, had his preliminary examination hearing set for 8:30 a.m. July 2 in courtroom 3 at the San Benito County Courthouse before Judge Steven Sanders. The judge set that date at a hearing last week, along with a pre-preliminary hearing June 26.
The Hollister Police Department issued two press releases earlier in 2018 in regards to a sexual assault that occurred in late 2017 in Downtown Hollister.
The first press release accompanied still images from downtown surveillance cameras and asked for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect wanted in relation to a sexual assault, and the second press release identified the suspect and it asked for the public’s assistance in locating Cory Daugherty.
Daugherty, who had a warrant issued for his arrest, was located and arrested in Santa Clara County. Daugherty was transferred to the San Benito County Jail, and arraigned in court on March 6.
Daugherty remains in custody on charges of forcible rape, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and several special allegations. Daugherty’s bail is set at $130,000.00.
In late 2017, a victim checked themselves into Hazel Hawkins Hospital and reported that they were sexually assaulted in downtown Hollister. Hollister Police Detectives were able to isolate pertinent footage from the event from the downtown surveillance system. The pictures were released to the public on January 11, 2018 with a request for assistance in identifying the suspect. Detectives were able to obtain enough information to obtain a warrant for Daugherty’s arrest on 1/18/18.
